Artist's Statement: Pure Form
Pure form appeals to the intuitive. It speaks to the inherent sense of rightness, or proportionality and the undergirding laws of natural beauty. It seeks to move the viewer not by what it recalls but rather by how it feels.
This is what I seek to capture in my work.
Biography
Jacob Michael Goodman is a sculptural artist whose work ranges from classical to organic to contemporary. He has always loved working with his hands and with wood, finding wonder in the grain and natural color but also in executing minimalist designs with exceptional form.
His artistic development was mentored by his interactions with master Scottish furnituremaker Dougal Charteris, and woodturners Ashley Harwood, Stuart Batty, and David Ellsworth. He also takes inspiration from the sculptural designs of Barbara Hepworth.
Jacob lives and works in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville in Western North Carolina , where wood is abundant. He is a member of the Southern Highlands Craft Guild, a guest teacher at the Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in Gatlinburg TN, and an exhibitor at the Smithsonian Craft Show & Exhibition in Washington DC.
